MLS has had quite the offseason with insane transfers and decisions regarding the US Open Cup. However, Adidas gave MLS one of the best gifts that the league could have expected in the form of fire kits. Clubs across the league announced beautiful and unique kits, with the Quakes  getting  one  of  the more interesting jerseys.

Adidas continues to kill it with MLS jerseys, giving fans certified classics for this season. Coinciding with the club’s 50th anniversary, Adidas cooked up one of the better jersey’s the team’s had in a while.

To celebrate the club’s 50th, all sides are trying to make this a season to remember, even the front office has pulled together an impressive window. From the merch to the marketing campaign, all is centering around a celebration of the Bay’s MLS club. This feels like the first time that Adidas is properly addressing the Quakes.

Since the club’s revamp in the mid-2010s, the team received kits that have varied from hideous to boring. It’s truly a shame given just how good their early MLS kits were. Even if this isn’t the perfect kit, it’s perhaps the best they’ve had in their modern MLS era.

When MLS kicks off in the coming weeks, the Quakes will look to celebrate their 50th anniversary with good play on the pitch. Additionally, it always helps to look good while playing good.

Despite what their current  reputation would have you believe, the San Jose Earthquakes are one of the American soccer clubs with the most history. Across different incarnations, the team won and lost while giving fans a community.

This season’s kits throw it back to the 70s, where the Quakes played in the turbulent NASL. For what has to be the best part of the kit, the logo is taken straight from the team’s original design. Across the team’s storied history, this is the first time this logo has been used since the NASL days.

Quakes’ kits and merch tended to shy away from referencing the team’s past in recent seasons. Even the beautiful San Jose Clash colors have yet to make a comeback for this iteration of the team. Given that this is the club’s 50th anniversary, it’s only fitting that Adidas gives fans a kit that celebrates the history of this team.

When the first leaks came out thanks to EA FC, fans saw a unique kit that seemed to be an instant classic. Comparing the shirt to other MLS releases, it falls just below the best of MLS which is made up of Minnesota, Orlando, Portland and Seattle.

Other Quakes’ kits that used the white and red combo lacked the simplicity of this kit. In what was typical of shirts of that era, little other flavorings exist, leaving plenty of blank space on the kit. This should give total focus on the logo and uniqueness of the 70s look.

Unfortunately, and to no fault to the designers, the jersey ad takes away some of the beauty. It feels that to accommodate the jersey ad, the size of the logo was decreased. An ideal version of this kit consists of the original logo displayed across the chest.

For the first time since their return to the Bay, Adidas delivered a proper kit for the upcoming  season. Finally, fans will get to wear a jersey that other fanbases can be envious of.

In the pantheon of Quakes’ jerseys, this season’s new kit falls near the top of those released in their modern MLS era. Rather than being a slight at the team’s identity, it’s a reflection of how uninspiring the team’s been to deserve a worthy kit.

No matter the Adidas MLS jersey models, the Quakes always find themselves on the short end of the stick. Horrendous kit after a boring one, there is no need to make them pop because the team’s play hardly ever brings eyes to them.

It’d be one thing if the Quakes donned ugly shirts that were so bad they were memorable, but theirs have just been boringly bad. For example, their all red from 2014 remains a forgotten gem in terms of how ugly it is. It’s as if Adidas saw their old jerseys and rather than pay homage like this year, they decided red was why they looked good.

Given the history of the team, there are just so many different looks to choose from. Even if their recent history hasn’t been stellar, the Quakes are forever an iconic club.

The Bay Area is littered with teams who have made their image and brand iconic, no matter the fortunes of the teams. From A’s hats seen at every ballpark to Warriors shirts worn at any sporting event, to be part of the Bay’s landscape, you must cultivate an image. Especially with the World Cup on the way,  the Quakes understand that they must be more prominent when the tournament arrives.

Recent seasons saw the team try to appeal to the community by delivering unique swag that connects to fans. Last year’s utility shirt was a beautiful touch that had fans salivating. There is a path  forwards towards greater relevancy for the  Quakes, but  it begins by building an attractive brand.

As MLS continues to gain popularity, brands start to take the league and its clubs more seriously. Fortunately for fans, this likely means better shirts for fans in the near future.

With the team celebrating their 50th, fans will be treated to a season centered around celebrating the club that has repped the Bay for decades. Although it may just be a jersey, it’s a touching tribute to a team that has often been forgotten. Now, fans can only hope that the team’s play will mirror their beautiful kits.
